Neighborhoods in Chiang Mai

The Old City of Chiang Mai is a roughly square area enclosed by a moat and remnants of 13th-century brick walls. Within its 1.5-km-wide perimeter lie dozens of historic temples, guesthouses, cafés, and quiet residential lanes—a walkable district that forms the spiritual and geographic core of the city.

Nimmanhaemin Road (Nimman) is Chiang Mai's trendiest neighbourhood, a grid of numbered sois (lanes) packed with indie boutiques, specialty-coffee shops, co-working spaces, and contemporary art galleries. It bridges the gap between the historic Old City and the university district.

The Riverside quarter along Charoen Rat Road follows the west bank of the Ping River south of Warorot Market. It's a atmospheric strip of colonial-era shophouses, riverside restaurants, and converted warehouse venues that quietly rivals Nimman for evening ambience.
