History
King Mengrai founded the walled city in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The moat and walls were both defensive and ceremonial; the Five Gates correspond to compass points and spiritual functions. Much of the wall has been rebuilt, but original brick sections survive.
Visitor Tips
- On foot: The entire area is best explored on foot or by rented bicycle.
- Early mornings: Monks collecting alms between 06:00 and 07:00 add an authentic Lanna atmosphere.
- Duration: 2–3 hours for a thorough circuit.
