Gothenburg Cathedral (Domkyrkan) is the seat of the Diocese of Gothenburg, a serene neoclassical church completed in 1815. Its austere exterior belies a luminous interior with a gilded altarpiece and an unusual post and lintel arrangement that gives the nave a classical Greek temple feel.

GöteborgsOperan is a striking waterfront opera house on the north bank of the Göta älv, recognisable by its ship-inspired silhouette of glass and red granite. Since opening in 1994, it has been one of Scandinavia's premier venues for opera, ballet, musical theatre, and concerts.

Gunnebo House and Gardens is an exquisite neoclassical estate 15 minutes south of central Gothenburg. Designed by architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg in the 1780s, the manor house sits amid formal French gardens, an English landscape park, and an organic kitchen garden — a Downton Abbey moment in the Swedish countryside.

Götaplatsen is Gothenburg's grandest cultural square, dominated by Carl Milles' monumental Poseidon fountain. Framed by the Museum of Art, the City Theatre, and the Concert Hall, it serves as both the cultural heart of the city and the dramatic terminus of Kungsportsavenyn.

Skansen Kronan is a 17th-century fortress perched atop Risåsberget hill in the Haga district. Built between 1687 and 1700, the sturdy circular tower was designed to defend Gothenburg's southern flank — though it never saw battle. Today it offers some of the best panoramic views of the city.

Kronhuset is the oldest secular building in Gothenburg, a red-brick storehouse built in 1654 for the Swedish military. The surrounding Kronhusbodarna courtyard houses traditional artisan workshops — a glassblower, potter, silversmith, and clockmaker — in picturesque 18th-century wooden buildings.

Älvsborg Fortress (Nya Elfsborg) is a 17th-century island fortress guarding the entrance to Gothenburg's harbour. Reachable only by boat from Lilla Bommen, the journey across the Göta älv estuary is half the experience — the other half is exploring thick-walled bastions and hearing tales of sieges, prisoners, and fishwives.

Kungsportsavenyn — known simply as "Avenyn" — is Gothenburg's grand boulevard, running from Kungsportsbron in the north to Götaplatsen in the south. Lined with plane trees, restaurants, theatres, and bars, this 800-metre promenade is the city's social runway.
