Älvsborg Fortress (Nya Elfsborg) is a 17th-century island fortress guarding the entrance to Gothenburg's harbour. Reachable only by boat from Lilla Bommen, the journey across the Göta älv estuary is half the experience — the other half is exploring thick-walled bastions and hearing tales of sieges, prisoners, and fishwives.
The current fortress was constructed 1653–1670 after the original Älvsborg Castle was demolished. It played a key defensive role during wars with Denmark and Norway, was besieged twice without falling, and later served as a prison. It was decommissioned in 1869 and opened to visitors in the early 20th century.
