Overview

The National Museum of Natural History is the most visited natural history museum in the world, welcoming over 7 million visitors annually. Part of the Smithsonian Institution, it houses more than 148 million specimens and artifacts spanning 4.5 billion years of Earth's history.

History

Opened in 1910, the museum was designed by Hornblower & Marshall in the Beaux-Arts style. Its collection began with specimens from the Smithsonian's original 1846 bequest and the 1876 Centennial Exposition.

• Tip 1: Arrive before 10:30 AM to avoid peak crowds, especially on weekends and holidays.
