Overview
The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. Opened in 2016, it is the newest Smithsonian museum on the National Mall.
Highlights
- History Galleries: Underground levels chronicle the journey from Africa through slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, segregation, and the civil rights movement.
- Culture Galleries: Celebrate African American contributions to music, visual arts, sports, and cuisine.
- Contemplative Court: A meditative water feature for reflection between the history and culture floors.
History
The idea for the museum dates back to 1915, but it took a century to realize. Designed by David Adjaye in collaboration with Philip Freelon, the bronze-clad Corona structure draws from Yoruban art. It opened on September 24, 2016.
