The National Museum of the American Indian is dedicated to the life, languages, literature, history, and arts of the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. Its curvilinear limestone building was designed to evoke natural rock formations shaped by wind and water.

History
The museum opened on September 21, 2004, as the last major museum on the National Mall. Its collection of over 825,000 objects originated from the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation in New York, established in 1916.
