Fairmount Park

Overview

Fairmount Park is one of the largest urban park systems in the world at over 2,000 acres, stretching along both banks of the Schuylkill River. It encompasses historic mansions, sculpture gardens, and miles of trails and meadows.

History

Established in 1855 to protect the city's water supply from industrial pollution, Fairmount Park grew through acquisitions to encompass thousands of acres. It hosted the 1876 Centennial Exposition, America's first World's Fair.
