Overview

Philadelphia City Hall is the largest municipal building in the United States, topped by a 167-foot bronze statue of William Penn. The ornate Second Empire-style building took 30 years to complete and anchors the center of Penn's original grid.

History

Construction began in 1871 and wasn't completed until 1901 — making it one of the longest construction projects in American history. For 86 years, a "gentlemen's agreement" prevented any building from exceeding the brim of Penn's hat.
