The John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge is a 3,150-foot truss bridge spanning the Cumberland River, connecting downtown to East Nashville. Originally built in 1909 for vehicular traffic, it was converted to pedestrian-only use in 1998 and is now one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world.
Named for journalist and civil rights advocate John Seigenthaler, the bridge was originally the Woodland Street Bridge, carrying streetcars and automobiles. After the adjacent Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge opened in 1996, the old bridge was repurposed for pedestrians.
