The Museum of African American History on Beacon Hill preserves and interprets the history of Boston's free Black community from the colonial era through the 19th century. It encompasses the African Meeting House (1806) — the oldest standing Black church building in the United States.
The African Meeting House was built in 1806 by free Black craftsmen on the north slope of Beacon Hill, serving as a church, school, and community center. It was a hub of the abolitionist movement — Frederick Douglass spoke here, and recruitment for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment (from the film "Glory") took place here.
