The Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park encompasses 34 islands and peninsulas in Boston Harbor, accessible by seasonal ferry from Long Wharf. Georges Island (with Civil War–era Fort Warren) and Spectacle Island (with swimming beaches and hiking trails) are the most popular destinations.
The harbor islands have served as sites for lighthouses, fortifications, quarantine hospitals, and a Nike missile base. Georges Island's Fort Warren held Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. Major cleanup efforts in the 1990s–2000s transformed formerly polluted islands into recreational destinations.
