The Zona Hotelera is Cancún's iconic L-shaped barrier island, a 25-km sand strip between the Caribbean Sea and Laguna Nichupté packed with resorts, malls, restaurants, and beaches. Boulevard Kukulcán runs its length, connecting every major Hotel Zone attraction.
Before 1970, the barrier island was an uninhabited sandbar. A FONATUR (National Tourism Fund) computer analysis selected it as the optimal site for a planned resort destination. The first hotel (the Cancún Caribe) opened in 1974 with 165 rooms.
