Overview
Xcaret is a massive eco-archaeological park 75 km south of Cancún that blends Maya ruins, underground rivers, wildlife sanctuaries, and nightly cultural shows into a full-day experience. It anchors the Riviera Maya's experiential tourism.
Highlights
- Underground Rivers: Float through crystal-clear limestone caverns illuminated by natural skylights.
- México Espectacular Show: A 300-person evening performance tracing Mexican history from pre-Hispanic times to the present.
- Butterfly Pavilion: One of the largest in the Americas, housing 20+ species of tropical butterflies.
History
Built around a natural inlet that served as a Maya port (Polé) for canoes bound for Cozumel, Xcaret opened in 1990. It has since expanded to include aviary, coral reef aquarium, and jaguar island exhibits.
