Río Secreto is a semi-flooded underground cave system near Playa del Carmen, where visitors wade and swim through illuminated chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal-clear water. It's one of the Riviera Maya's most dramatic natural attractions.
Discovered accidentally in 2004 by a local landowner whose dog chased an iguana into the cave entrance, Río Secreto was immediately recognized for its geological significance. It opened to the public in 2007 with strict conservation protocols.
