Overview
El Centro is Cancún's workaday downtown, where the city's 900,000 residents live, work, shop, and eat. The grid of streets around Parque de las Palapas and Avenida Tulum offers authentic Mexican street food, local markets, and a refreshingly non-touristy atmosphere.
Highlights
- Avenida Tulum: The main commercial boulevard lined with banks, pharmacies, and local restaurants.
- Parque de las Palapas: The central plaza and evening gathering spot (see its own entry).
- Street Tacos: Some of Cancún's best tacos al pastor, carnitas, and cochinita pibil stands operate downtown.
History
El Centro was purpose-built alongside the Hotel Zone in the 1970s to house the workers who would staff the resorts. It has since developed its own commercial identity with multiple supermanzanas (super-blocks) organized in a modernist grid.
Visitor Tips
- Taxi or bus: R-1 buses connect the Hotel Zone to downtown in about 25 minutes.
- Cash essential: Many local vendors and taquerias are cash-only.
- Duration: 2–3 hours.
