Overview
Chiesa di San Michele in Foro stands on the site of the ancient Roman forum, its towering Pisan-Romanesque façade soaring far above the nave roof. The multi-tiered loggia of twisted columns and inlaid marble is crowned by a 4-metre statue of the Archangel Michael.
Highlights
- Towering Façade: Taller than the actual church behind it, the four-storey colonnade is one of Tuscany's finest examples of Pisan-Romanesque architecture.
- Archangel Michael: The winged bronze-and-marble statue at the summit gleams at sunset.
- Filippo Lippi Painting: The church contains a notable painting of Saints Helena, Jerome, Sebastian, and Roch.
History
Built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the site of the Roman forum, the church evolved over several construction campaigns. The over-ambitious façade was intended for a larger nave that was never built, creating its distinctive proportional imbalance.
