Piazza Napoleone

Overview

Piazza Napoleone is Lucca's grandest formal square, dominated by the neoclassical Palazzo Ducale (now provincial government offices). Created during the Napoleonic era by demolishing medieval buildings, the broad open space contrasts with Lucca's typically narrow streets.

• Palazzo Ducale: The imposing 16th-century palace, remodeled under Bartolomeo Ammannati, fills the square's entire eastern side.
• Plane Trees: Double rows of enormous plane trees provide leafy shade and frame formal vistas.

History

The square was created in 1806 by order of Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, Napoleon's sister and Princess of Lucca, who ordered the demolition of a neighbourhood to create a parade ground. The original statue of Napoleon was later replaced by one of Grand Duchess Marie Louise of Bourbon.

• Concert Season: In July, the square transforms into a major concert venue — book festival tickets well in advance.
• Adjacent Piazza del Giglio: The smaller piazza next door hosts the Teatro del Giglio opera house.
