Lucca's Centro Storico is one of Italy's best-preserved medieval city centres, entirely enclosed within the Renaissance walls. A labyrinth of narrow lanes, hidden squares, and ancient towers rewards aimless wandering.

• No Cars: The historic centre is largely pedestrianised, with only residents' vehicles allowed.
• Hidden Towers: Besides Guinigi and Ore, over 130 medieval towers once rose above the rooftops — traces remain in many buildings.

History

Lucca was founded as a Roman colony in 180 BC and maintained independence as a republic for almost 500 years (1160–1799). This long autonomy explains the preservation of its medieval and Renaissance fabric — the city was never sacked or subjected to radical urban renewal by an occupying power.

Visitor Tips

• Get Lost: The best strategy is to put away the map and simply explore. Every turn reveals a carved portal, a tiny church, or an ancient inscription.
• Water Fountains: Public drinking fountains (acqua potabile) are scattered throughout.
• Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
