Overview
Yeongildae Beach is Pohang's historic main beach, situated at the southern end of Yeongil Bay directly below the Space Walk skywalk. Smaller than Bukbu Beach but more central, it's the venue for the city's annual New Year Sunrise Festival and hosts a string of seafood restaurants along its promenade.
Highlights
- New Year Festival: Every year on January 1st, thousands gather on the sand to watch the first sunrise and celebrate with fireworks.
- Space Walk Access: The looping skywalk sculpture sits at the beach's northern edge, making this a natural starting point for a harbour walk.
- Evening Atmosphere: Lit-up seafood restaurants and the reflected glow of the Space Walk create a pleasant evening scene.
History
Yeongildae has been a public beach since at least the 1960s. The area was revitalised in 2018 when the Space Walk was installed, bringing a new wave of visitors to what had been a somewhat quiet stretch of sand.
Visitor Tips
- Combine with Space Walk: Walk the beach, then ascend the skywalk for aerial views.
- Swimming: Lifeguard-supervised swim zone in summer; shallow and safe for children.
- Duration: 45–60 minutes.
