Oeosa is a mountain temple located in a remote valley on the western outskirts of Pohang, approximately 20 km from the city centre. Associated with the legendary monk Wonhyo — who is said to have attained enlightenment after drinking from a skull-cup near here — the temple is surrounded by dense forest and offers a genuinely secluded atmosphere.
Oeosa was founded in 634 CE by the monk Uisang and is closely associated with his contemporary Wonhyo. The Samguk Yusa records that Wonhyo achieved his famous "skull-cup" enlightenment in a cave near the temple during a journey to Tang China. The temple was rebuilt several times, most recently after the Korean War.
