Guryongpo Beach

Overview

Guryongpo Beach is a sheltered crescent of sand in the Guryongpo harbour area, framed by rocky headlands and backed by a strip of raw-fish restaurants famous across Korea for fresh crab and sashimi. The calm waters and compact size make it an intimate alternative to Pohang's larger city beaches.

• Snow Crab Season: Guryongpo is the self-proclaimed "crab capital" of Korea — the harbour restaurants serve steamed snow crab from November through March.

History

Guryongpo has been a fishing port for centuries, with the name meaning "Nine Dragon Harbour" from a legend about nine dragons ascending from the sea. The beach became a modest tourist destination in the 1990s, driven largely by the reputation of its crab restaurants.

• Winter for crab: November–March is snow crab season; restaurants fill up quickly at lunch.
• Summer for swimming: Lifeguard service in July–August.
