Girimsa is a secluded Buddhist temple deep in the forested valleys of Mount Hamwolsan, about 30 km east of Gyeongju city centre. One of the largest temple complexes in the Gyeongju area, it preserves several National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties in a setting of exceptional natural beauty.
Tradition dates Girimsa's founding to 643 CE by the Indian monk Gwangyu, making it contemporaneous with Bulguksa. The temple complex grew to encompass over 20 sub-temples during the Silla period. Despite repeated fires, the main buildings were faithfully reconstructed, and several original Silla and Goryeo artefacts survive.
