Night Safari

Overview

The Night Safari, opened in 1994, was the world's first nocturnal zoo. Set in 35 hectares of secondary rainforest beside the Singapore Zoo, it houses over 900 animals from 100 species across seven geographic zones, illuminated by subtle moonlight-replicating lamps that allow natural nocturnal behaviour.

• Tram Ride: A 40-minute narrated tram tour through four zones, from the Himalayan Foothills to the Equatorial Africa zone.
• Walking Trails: Four self-guided trails offering close encounters with fishing cats, slow lorises, and Malayan tigers.

History

Conceived by WRS (Wildlife Reserves Singapore) to extend the zoo's operating hours, the Night Safari opened on 26 May 1994 and became an instant hit. It consistently ranks among Singapore's top three attractions, drawing over 1.1 million visitors annually.

Visitor Tips

• Book the first tram (18:50 entry): Queues build rapidly after 20:00.
• Walk first, tram second: The walking trails are quieter early and animals are most active right after dusk.
• Duration: 2.5–3 hours.
