Overview
The Helix Bridge is a 280-metre pedestrian bridge connecting the Marina Centre promenade to the Bayfront area, designed in the form of a double-helix DNA structure. Opened in 2010, it was the first bridge in the world to adopt this architectural form, with four cantilevered viewing platforms framing different perspectives of the Marina Bay skyline.
Highlights
- DNA Structure: The bridge's paired helical trusses incorporate the letters C, G, A, T (DNA base pairs) in its steel mesh.
- Night Illumination: Coloured LED lights trace the helix curves after dark, turning the bridge into a sculptural light installation.
- Photo Platforms: Four mid-bridge viewing decks offer the classic Marina Bay Sands + ArtScience Museum + CBD skyline composition.
History
Designed by Australian architects Cox Architecture and Arup engineers, the Helix Bridge opened on 24 April 2010 alongside the Bayfront development. It won the World Architecture Festival "Transport" category award that year.
Visitor Tips
- Walk it at night: The LED illumination and surrounding skyline glow make this one of Singapore's best nocturnal walks.
- Combine with Marina Bay Sands: The bridge deposits you directly at the Shoppes at MBS.
- Duration: 10–15 minutes to cross.
