Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a 211-acre horse-racing facility in the heart of South Mumbai, operational since 1883. Its sweeping grass oval ringed by Art Deco stands provides one of the city's most surreal contrasts — elite horse racing surrounded by skyscrapers and slums.
Established by the Royal Western India Turf Club in 1883, the racecourse was modelled on British courses. It remains one of the few inner-city racecourses in the world, and its land value makes it one of Mumbai's most politically sensitive green spaces.
