Kala Ghoda ("Black Horse") is Mumbai's premier art district, centred on a stretch of Mahatma Gandhi Road in Fort. Its tree-lined pavements host galleries, design studios, bookshops, and heritage buildings, anchored by the annual Kala Ghoda Arts Festival each February.
Named after a now-removed equestrian statue of King Edward VII, the district became Mumbai's cultural core when galleries and heritage institutions clustered here in the 20th century. The annual arts festival, started in 1999, cemented its identity.
