Overview

The Asiatic Society of Mumbai is a scholarly institution housed in a magnificent neoclassical building at Horniman Circle, containing over 1 million books and 30,000 manuscripts, some dating to the 14th century.

History

Founded in 1804 by Sir James Mackintosh, the Society is one of India's oldest learned institutions. Its current building on Horniman Circle was completed in 1833 in the neoclassical Town Hall complex.
