Overview
The Ochterlony Monument, now renamed Shahid Minar, is a 48-metre fluted column rising from the northern edge of the Maidan. It is one of Kolkata's most recognisable landmarks.
Highlights
- Eclectic design: An Egyptian base, a Syrian column shaft, and a Turkish cupola — a deliberate blend of styles.
- Elevated views: Though public access to the top is intermittent, the column's base offers strong sightlines across the Maidan.
- Political history: The monument has been the gathering point for Kolkata's political rallies for over a century.
History
Built in 1828 to commemorate Major-General Sir David Ochterlony's victories in the Anglo-Nepalese War, the 48-metre column was renamed Shahid Minar ('Martyrs' Tower') in 1969.
Visitor Tips
- Tip 1: The monument is best photographed from the Red Road or Esplanade side.
- Tip 2: Pair it with a Maidan walk south toward the Victoria Memorial.
