The Citadella is a Habsburg-era fortress built in 1854 atop the 235-metre Gellért Hill, commanding the most panoramic vantage point in Budapest. Originally constructed to intimidate the Hungarian population after the failed 1848 revolution, the fortification now serves as a lookout platform offering unobstructed 360° views over both banks of the Danube.
After the failed 1848–49 revolution, the Habsburgs built the Citadella to control Budapest by commanding the river crossing. It saw brief military action in 1945 during the siege of Budapest. After decades of neglect, a major restoration project (2021–2025) reopened the fortress with new exhibits and improved access paths.
