Overview

The Budapest Christmas Fair (Budapesti Karácsonyi Vásár) transforms Vörösmarty Square into one of Central Europe's most enchanting Advent markets every November through January. Over 100 wooden chalets encircle the Mihály Vörösmarty statue, selling traditional Hungarian handicrafts, chimney cake (kürtőskalács), mulled wine, and seasonal delicacies beneath a canopy of fairy lights.

• Kürtőskalács stalls: The spiral chimney cakes — rolled in cinnamon, cocoa, or walnut — baked fresh before your eyes in rotating ovens.

History

The Christmas Fair was first held in 1998 and has since grown into one of Europe's top-rated holiday markets, repeatedly winning "Best European Christmas Market" awards. Its Vörösmarty Square location connects it to the commercial bustle of Váci utca and the Danube Promenade.

• Weekday evenings are magical: The lights and atmosphere peak after 5 PM but weekday crowds are manageable.
