The 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck at 5:23 AM on April 26, 1966, destroying over 78,000 homes and leaving 300,000 people homeless. The Soviet response — sending builders from every republic — became a symbol of 'peoples' friendship' and reshaped Tashkent's architecture entirely. The memorial was erected in 1976.
