Chorsu Bazaar is Central Asia's most iconic market, a sprawling indoor-outdoor labyrinth beneath a massive turquoise dome. The market has operated at this crossroads ('chorsu' means 'four roads') for over 2,000 years, serving as a focal point of Silk Road commerce.
A market has existed at this crossroads since at least the 2nd century BCE, when Tashkent sat on the northern branch of the Silk Road. The current domed structure was built in the Soviet era but follows the layout and spirit of traditional Central Asian bazaars. The surrounding market stalls sprawl far beyond the main dome.
