Samarkand's Old Town encompasses the traditional mahalla neighborhoods radiating from the Registan and Bibi-Khanym Mosque. Narrow clay-walled lanes open onto vine-shaded courtyards, neighborhood mosques, and family workshops producing ceramics, embroidery, and metalwork. Walking these streets offers a glimpse of daily life unchanged for generations.
The mahalla system of neighborhood self-governance dates to the medieval period and was preserved through Russian colonial and Soviet eras. Each mahalla had its own mosque, bathhouse, and bakery. Post-independence Samarkand has been balancing preservation with modernization in these historic quarters.
