Registan Viewpoint (Tilla-Kari Minaret)

Overview

Several of the Registan madrasas offer rooftop or minaret-level access for a small additional fee, providing an elevated perspective over the square and across Samarkand's skyline. The view from atop the Tilla-Kari or Sher-Dor madrasa reveals the geometric perfection of the square's design and the scale of the surrounding old town.

History

Minaret and rooftop access has been offered intermittently as tourism infrastructure has developed. The rooftop terraces were originally functional spaces used for call to prayer and astronomical observation.

• Tip 1: Ask at the ticket booth specifically about rooftop access — it's not always advertised.
• Tip 2: The staircase is narrow and steep — not suitable for those with mobility issues.
