Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa ('Star and Moon Palace') was the summer residence of the last Emir of Bukhara, located 4 km north of the city centre. This eccentric palace blends Russian Art Nouveau and Central Asian Islamic architecture in a surprising hybrid style.
The palace was built between 1911 and 1918 by the last Emir, Alim Khan, who employed both Russian and local architects. When the Red Army invaded Bukhara in 1920, the Emir fled to Afghanistan, abandoning the palace. It was converted into a museum shortly after and has been open to the public since then.
