Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasa anchors the eastern side of Lyabi-Hauz and is instantly recognizable by its entrance mosaic depicting two phoenixes carrying deer toward a human-faced sun — a remarkably figurative image for Islamic architecture.
The building was originally constructed in 1622 as a caravanserai (traveller's inn) by Nadir Divan-Begi, the vizier of Imam Quli Khan. When the khan visited and praised it as a 'fine madrasa,' the vizier had no choice but to convert it into a theological school — hence the unusual layout and the figurative entrance mosaic, which would not normally appear on a religious building.
