Lyabi-Hauz ('Around the Pool') is a charming 17th-century plaza centered around a mulberry-shaded pool, flanked by madrasas and a khanaka (Sufi lodge). It is the social heart of old Bukhara, where locals gather to sip tea, play backgammon, and enjoy the cool shade.
The ensemble was created in 1620 when the vizier Nadir Divan-Begi built the pool, a madrasa, and a khanaka. The surrounding Kukeldash Madrasa predates the complex, built in 1568. During the Soviet era, the pool was drained and filled in, but it was restored in the 1990s as part of Bukhara's UNESCO heritage conservation.
