The Ismail Samani Mausoleum is Bukhara's oldest monument and a masterpiece of early Islamic architecture. Built entirely of baked bricks arranged in 18 different patterns, the cube-shaped tomb appears to change appearance as the sunlight shifts throughout the day.
Built between 892 and 943 AD by Ismail Samani, founder of the Samanid dynasty, as a family mausoleum. It survived Genghis Khan's destruction because it was buried under sand and debris. It was only rediscovered in 1934 during Soviet-era archaeological excavations. The mausoleum's survival makes it one of the most significant examples of pre-Mongol Islamic architecture.
