Zuoying Old City

Overview

Zuoying Old City is a Qing-dynasty walled settlement in northern Kaohsiung, one of the best-preserved urban fortifications in Taiwan. Stone walls, arched gates, and traditional temples remain intact amid modern residential blocks, creating an open-air history lesson.

Highlights

• City Gates: Three original stone gates (East, South, and North) survive, each flanked by ancient banyan trees.
• Chenghuang Temple: The City God Temple inside the walls is a colourful, incense-filled Taoist shrine active since the Qing dynasty.
• Residential Time Capsule: Walking the narrow alleys reveals traditional courtyard houses, small Mazu shrines, and vendors selling old-style pastries.

History

Built in 1826 under imperial orders to repel pirate raids, Zuoying Old City once enclosed 470 hectares with walls one to three metres thick. Much of the wall was dismantled during the Japanese era for building materials, but preservation efforts from the 1980s onwards saved the three gates and adjacent sections.

Visitor Tips

• Tip 1: Start at the East Gate and walk clockwise to hit all three surviving gates in under an hour.
• Tip 2: Combine with Lotus Pond, which is a 10-minute walk south.
• Duration: 45–60 minutes.
