Cijin Lighthouse sits on the northern tip of Cijin Island, perched on a small hilltop overlooking the entrance to Kaohsiung harbour. Originally built under Qing dynasty orders in 1883, the whitewashed brick tower is one of Taiwan's oldest surviving lighthouses.
After the Japanese military ship Botan-maru ran aground in 1883, the Qing government hired British engineers to construct a modern lighthouse at the harbour mouth. Renovated during the Japanese colonial period and again in 2005, the lighthouse remains operational and is managed by the Maritime Port Bureau.
