Overview
The Phuket Mining Museum documents three centuries of tin mining that transformed the island from a jungle-covered outpost into one of the wealthiest provinces in Siam. Set in a purpose-built complex, it combines dioramas, artefacts, and a recreated tin mine tunnel.
Highlights
- Mine Tunnel: A walk-through replica of a 19th-century tin mine with sound effects and life-size miner figures.
- Dioramas: Detailed scenes depict daily life during the mining era — market scenes, opium dens, and Chinese worker barracks.
- Mining Equipment: Original hydraulic monitors, sluice gates, and ore carts from operational mines.
History
Phuket's tin deposits were mined from the 16th century, with production peaking under Chinese labour in the 1800s. The industry collapsed after the global tin crash of 1985. The museum opened in 2009.
