Overview
Phang Nga Bay is a 400-square-kilometre bay northeast of Phuket, famous for its dramatic limestone karst islands rising vertically from emerald-green water. The bay is part of Ao Phang Nga National Park and includes the iconic James Bond Island (Ko Tapu).
Highlights
- James Bond Island (Ko Tapu): The 20-metre-tall leaning rock that starred in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) — Phuket's single most photographed natural feature.
- Sea Kayaking: Paddle through hidden hongs (collapsed cave lagoons) accessible only by kayak at low tide.
- Ko Panyi: A floating Muslim fishing village of 1,500 people built entirely on stilts.
History
The bay was gazetted as a national park in 1981. Its karsts formed from limestone deposited 250–280 million years ago, then sculpted by millions of years of marine erosion.
Visitor Tips
