Overview
Kata Beach is a 1.5-kilometre arc of fine white sand divided by a rocky headland into Kata Yai (big) and Kata Noi (small). Quieter and more family-oriented than Patong, it combines good swimming, surfing, and a relaxed village atmosphere.
Highlights
- Surfing Season: May to October brings consistent 1–2 metre swells, making Kata the best surf break on Phuket — board rentals start at 200 THB/hour.
- Coral Reef: Snorkelling is possible off the southern end near the rocky headland during calm months.
- Kata Night Market: Small nightly street-food market on the road behind the beach.
History
Kata developed as a surf and backpacker beach in the 1990s, growing more upscale with the arrival of resort hotels. It retains a less commercial atmosphere than Patong.
Visitor Tips
- Swimming: The beach is lifeguarded year-round; red flags indicate dangerous currents during monsoon.
- Viewpoint: Drive up to Karon Viewpoint (5 minutes south) for a photo looking down on Kata.
- Duration: 2–3 hours.
