Overview
Koh Larn (Coral Island) lies 7 km off Pattaya's coast in the Gulf of Thailand. The island's six beaches — Tawaen, Samae, Tien, Nual, Ta Yai, and Laem Tong — offer crystal-clear water and white sand that is markedly cleaner than mainland Pattaya.
Highlights
- Tawaen Beach: The most popular and busiest beach, with full facilities and water sports.
- Samae Beach: A smaller, less crowded alternative with calm turquoise water perfect for snorkelling.
- Motorbiking: Rent a scooter (200–300 THB/day) to explore the island's hilly interior and secluded viewpoints.
History
Koh Larn was traditionally a fishing community. Tourism took off in the 1990s as Pattaya's own beaches became increasingly polluted. The island now receives up to 20,000 visitors on peak weekends, prompting authorities to cap ferry capacity during holidays.
Visitor Tips
- Ferry: Public ferries depart from Bali Hai Pier every 30 minutes (30 THB, 45 min). Speedboats cost 1,500–2,000 THB but take only 15 minutes.
- Go early: Arrive on the first ferry (07:00) to enjoy quiet beaches before tour groups land at 10:00.
- Duration: 4–6 hours (half-day or full-day trip).
