Overview
Huay Kaew Waterfall is a modest but easily accessible cascade at the base of Doi Suthep, just a short drive or songthaew ride from the city centre. It's a favourite cool-off spot for students from nearby Chiang Mai University.
Highlights
- Easy Access: The waterfall is a short flat walk from the car park at the foot of Doi Suthep.
- Natural Pool: A shallow pool at the base is safe for wading and splashing.
- Forest Setting: Tall dipterocarp trees shade the trail leading to the falls.
History
The waterfall sits at the entrance to Doi Suthep–Pui National Park and has long been a recreation spot for city residents. The surrounding forest is part of Chiang Mai University's botanical research area.
Visitor Tips
- Rainy season best: The falls are most impressive from July to October; in the dry season they can be reduced to a trickle.
- Combine: Continue uphill from here to Wat Pha Lat or Doi Suthep temple.
- Duration: 30–45 minutes.
