Mactan Shrine

Overview

The Mactan Shrine is a memorial park on Mactan Island commemorating the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, in which the indigenous chieftain Lapu-Lapu and his warriors defeated the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The park features monuments to both figures, reflecting the complex history of the encounter.

• Lapu-Lapu Monument: A bronze statue of the warrior chieftain, considered the first Filipino hero, stands prominently in the park.
• Magellan Marker: A smaller marker on the opposite side commemorates Magellan's death at this site.

History

The Battle of Mactan was the first recorded resistance by native Filipinos against European colonizers. Lapu-Lapu's victory made him a national hero. The shrine was developed in the 20th century and refurbished for the 2021 quincentennial celebration of the event. The Magellan marker was originally placed by the Spanish colonial government in 1866.
