Fort San Pedro is the oldest and smallest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines, built in 1565 under the command of Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi. Located near the port area, it served as a military defense structure, a rebel stronghold, and later a prison camp during various periods of Philippine history.
Originally built with wood and later reconstructed in stone, Fort San Pedro served as the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. During the Philippine Revolution, it was used as a stronghold by Filipino rebels. The Japanese Imperial Army used it as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. It was declared a national historical landmark in 1937.
