Overview
The TSS Earnslaw is a vintage twin-screw coal-fired steamship that has been cruising Lake Wakatipu since 1912. Known affectionately as the "Lady of the Lake," she is one of the oldest commercial passenger steamships still operating in the Southern Hemisphere.
Highlights
- Working Steam Engine: Passengers can visit the engine room to watch stokers hand-feed coal into the original boilers — a working museum of Edwardian engineering.
- Lake Cruise: The 90-minute crossing to Walter Peak offers spectacular views of the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, and the lake's mountain-fringed shoreline.
- Piano Singalong: A pianist plays on board during the crossing, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere.
History
Built in Dunedin in 1912 and reassembled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, the Earnslaw originally transported livestock, goods, and passengers to remote sheep stations. She was rescued from retirement in 1969 and has operated as a tourist vessel ever since.
