Overview
Queenstown Mall is the pedestrianised main street running through the heart of the town centre. Lined with outdoor gear shops, souvenir stores, bars, and restaurants, it serves as the social hub where visitors and locals mingle against a backdrop of lake and mountain views.
Highlights
- Mountain Views: The mall opens at its northern end to views of the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu.
- Adventure Booking: Dozens of adventure activity booking offices line the strip, making it easy to compare and book last-minute bungy, skydiving, and jet boat trips.
- Evening Scene: After dark, the mall transforms into Queenstown's nightlife strip with lively bars and late-night eateries.
History
The mall was pedestrianised in 1975, making it one of the earliest car-free shopping streets in New Zealand. Many of the original gold rush-era buildings were replaced in the early 20th century, but the intimate scale of the street reflects the original town layout.
